why drum?

Drumming is the oldest known musical discipline on the planet. It’s also the coolest. Guitarists would like you to believe that they hold that title, but well, they’re guitarists so who actually listens to them? On a more serious note, the art of drumming is one steeped in discipline, creativity, passion, fun and, above all, musicality. A good drummer is the heart of the music, the driving rhythm that moves people to dance, to sing, to leap about like lunatics and generally lose themselves. Learning to play the drums will give you more than a gift that will last your lifetime. It will engender within you self-discipline, perseverance, a positive mindset, a willingness to try, fail, and try again, and, of course, indulge your true desire to hit stuff really hard and fast.

"...Everything Mike teaches builds on what you’ve learned previously. It all fits together so you can always see where you’re going and why you’re doing each thing. He's clearly passionate about the drums and i've been really inspired to learn more."

our ethos

  • passion

We have a passion for music and for sharing what we’ve learned. Music is the way we communicate, the universal language that knows no boundaries or borders, and giving that gift to others is what gets us out of bed in the morning.

  • creativity

Music is creativity unbound and unfettered. We believe everyone is creative and can learn to express that creativity if taught in the right way. Bringing that creativity alive is at the heart of what we do, and we love it.

  • mastery

With only one life, shouldn’t we strive for more than mediocrity, for more than ‘just enough?’ Playing the drums allows you to fully express yourself. Mastery gives you control of that expression, the unfettered ability to say who you are in a musical way.

"An average band with a great drummer sounds great, a great band with an average drummer sounds average"

Mike Cairns BMus, PGCE

Mike has been playing the drums for 30 years, only slightly longer than he has been walking. He’s been gigging nearly as long with several European tours, festival appearances and recording sessions on his dance card. With a Post Graduate qualification in Music Education from Goldsmiths University and a degree in Popular Music Performance, he is a professional music teacher with 15 years experience working with students of all ages and walks of life and loves teaching almost as much as his new DeBroize snare…well it is custom made, one of a kind..and from reclaimed timber…and it’s shiny and loud.
